A common question we receive at Sunny Dental is “How can I make my teeth whiter?”. As Hollywood actors/actresses shine their pearly whites, more people are aware of the color of their teeth. There are several ways to acheive teeth whitening.

When Whitening is necessary

Diet consisting a lot of deep colored product, such as coffee or wine can stain your teeth. Tobacco products such as cigarettes can also stain your teeth. While discolored teeth can still be strong, it can be perceived as aged dentition. Whitening them can make you smile brighter and more confidently.

What is Teeth Whitening?

The active ingredient in most teeth whitening products is hydrogen peroxide. Depending on the concentration, consistency, and time left on the teeth, different products can have varied results. Two common whitening methods are In Office Whitening, and Take Home Whitening.

In office whitening are performed in the office. Because the product has a high hydrogen peroxide concentration, it needs to be handled by a dental professional. The higher concentration means a significantly whiter smile can be achieved in a short amount of time.

On the other hand, take home whitening products are to be used at home. Because of the lowered hydrogen peroxide concentration, it is safe to be used outside of the office by patients. This kind of product is gentler on the gum, is cheaper, and requires longer time to take effect.

Common Side Effect of Teeth Whitening

The most common side effect of teeth whitening is sensitivity. Hydrogen peroxide works by clearing out the stained molecules in the dentinal tubules. Once cleared, the tubules acts as a open passage between outside air/water and the pulp (nerve) in the center of the tooth.

The best way to alleviate post-whitening sensitivity to use a desensitizer after the whitening session. This is especially important after in office treatments. Another option is to use high fluoride product such as MI Paste. This product work by plugging the open tubules with fluoride.

Why do most people benefit from teeth whitening treatment?

A brighter smile can make you smile more confidently. Having white teeth also give you a healthier, and more youthful look.

But remember that you are beautiful the way you are! Sunny Dental believes in viewing our bodies, including our teeth, with gratitude and gentleness.
